Late Nights and Long Bugs: A Developer's Honest Account of Building Alone
There's a romantic idea of the solo developer building something great in their spare time. The reality involves a lot of coffee, confusion, and questioning your life choices at 2 AM.
The blogs don't tell you about the session where you spend four hours debugging a problem that turns out to be a single missing semicolon. They don't mention the Tuesday night when you push an update and immediately break the most-used feature, and you're the only person who can fix it, and it's already midnight.
Building Deecliq alone means wearing every hat simultaneously. I'm the product manager deciding what to build. The designer deciding how it looks. The developer writing the code. The QA tester trying to break what I just built. The support person answering questions. The sysadmin keeping the servers running. The marketer trying to make people aware it exists.
Some days this feels like freedom. I can decide to completely rebuild a feature at 9 PM because I had an idea in the shower. No meetings, no approvals, no committees.
Some days this feels like drowning. Every bug is my fault. Every design decision is mine to second-guess. There's no teammate to sanity-check your logic when your brain has been staring at the same function for three hours.
I keep building because the moments when it works — when someone uses a tool I built and it saves them real time — make every difficult night worth it. That's not a motivational poster. That's just the honest truth.
